Week 3

Copy cats

For week three we began doing copycat methods. The first method was a simple pencil sketch by Augustus John.
Id say the likeness in there for sure, but the main thing I was focusing on with this piece was capturing the flow of his draftsmanship with my pencil.

Id say I made a fair attempt at this, however there is a certain softness that is lacking with my piece. perhaps it was the tool I was using being too hard, or maybe even the fact that my lighting made the picture seem off. The only way I can improve though is by doing more difficult shading techniques like this again and again. Pencils are an artists best friend after all.

The next material was a scrape board task meant to emanate the style of a wood block print by Claire Leighton.
This was by far I'd say the piece that was most out of my comfort zone, with negative space being something I rarely work in.

That said, Id say I certainly found my strive with this piece. Im especially happy with the rendering on the clothes, forearm and scythe. However I did find some burnout and difficulty illustrating the intricate foliage in some spaces, which you can probably see towards the top right and middle right.

All in all, certainly a success though!

Lastly, we have a pen and ink piece from Mervyn Peake. From the start I knew this was going to be the one I slid most comfortably into, and Id say its an overall strong attempt at the piece.

My shortcomings however, are certainly in the ambiguous cloudy area towards the bottom of the piece, as I struggle to capture the murky flowing lifework that Peake does, as well as control tones to as fine of a degree.
The only other area I would say is weak is the hair, which does at first glance capture the same movement as Peake, but on closer inspection, lacks the tangles of the original.

overall though, id say this is still a piece I'm very happy with.
